African Militeria Events Diary

NEWSLETTER

April 2008

When we listed the first items into this Website back in September of 2006, we had it in mind to knock out some kind of a Newsletter every month or so. Of course they say that…..”The road to hell is paved with good intentions”……and your Quartermaster should by now have been court-martialled and shot at dawn long ago but Michael Kaplan passed a reprieve on me and the sentence was NOT  fortunately carried out!!!

There were of course mitigating circumstances and I am not going to bore you with the extraction of my gall bladder here.

Also, when we started this International Marketplace as a Trading Place for African Militaria; we were VERY conscious that our Clients might be worried that they could end up with an item that did NOT fit the ‘bill’ and was either a copy/fake/ or just even of a quality which did not meet the description given.

We therefore created a complex system to vet all items going through this Website but have since found that as THE BUCK STOPS HERE…..the only way to operate so that we have no comebacks is to handle the merchandise ourselves.

By operating this way we have not had more than one or two comebacks in every thousand sales and in each case we have seen the client right to his complete satisfaction. I did not realize that the KAPLAN name was so well respected in the Marketplace. The numerous compliments that we have received confirm this.

For those of you that read “HOW WE OPERATE” as it was framed back then…..I ask you to call in and see it now…...MUCH simpler…..very much on the’ KISS’ Principal!!!

More importantly; we have perfected a system such that you can put something into the Website via us and then from there, later, if it does not sell, then swing it into the Next Auction…….or even back to the AMC.

If you so desire you can place items direct into the Next Auction.

Speaking of the ‘NEXT AUCTION’……Ours will be on Wednesday the 21st of May 2008 and it will be our 40th……B 40, After TEN years of learning how to get it right!!!!

My last point on these Newsletters is that in the past they were far too long. You all like to look at the Pictures…..but hate to read.

So that’s it for now!!!!!

With the Best of Good Wishes from the Team.

Your “Quartermaster”,

David Lonsdale.

Third News Letter

Dear Friends, Collectors, Dealers and all interested parties out there,

It looks as if I gave you chaps far too much "homework" to do in the last Newsletter!!! So this time I am going to try and keep it short.

Michael did warn me when I took on the task of being scribe to this Website:

He said….“The trouble with Collectors is that they are by nature bone idle. You have to lay it all out for them. If you invite them they just might turn up, usually not, and if they do come they will not bring anything, contribute anything, and rarely say anything. They will expect you to lay on ALL the entertainment: Band, Bells, Whistles and Dancing Girls".

NOMENCLATURE
(Oxford Dictionary Definition: A Community’s system of names for things; the terminology and systematic naming as used within a science or discipline).

At the end of the last newsletter I promised that one of the subjects, if not the main drive of the next letter, would embrace an understanding of the nomenclature (see above definition) as used and generally banded about within the collecting field of militaria to describe and refer to certain items or the condition of same.

To tread on safe ground let me refer to my Concise Oxford Dictionary on just one small word alone:- Gild.
1. To cover thinly with gold.
2. To tinge with golden colour or light.

 First News Letter

I am going to keep this first letter short and sweet and introduce in my next letter the topic of ‘Nomenclature’, by this I mean the systematic naming and terminology to describe the make, state and style of militaria which is collected.

The reason I feel that this is so important and that a really good, precise and accurate description of items be given is that there is nothing more upsetting and irritating than NOT getting what you had hoped for because it has been poorly, even misleadingly described.
