A CAST SET OF FOUR; SILVER PLATED ON COPPER; SMALL ENTREE DISHES
We have here a set of four small dishes which were used for the dispension of the likes of olives or cashew nuts on 'Mess Nights' or other Special Occasions.
This set of dishes can be used for a host of reasons......Anything from a few Olives or Nuts.....or even as Salts.
On the back of each we have stamped......SERANCO SPC......We are told that SERANCO was a Company that operated out of Johannesburg during the late 1960's. They specialised in the supply of Fine Hallmarked Silver and Silver Plated items to the likes of the Army......(Officer's and Sergeant's Messes)......as well as Embassies and Government Departments.
This was the time when South Africa wanted to look good to those that it entertained from the outside world.
These small trays......each marked S P C......which stands for Silver Plate on Copper......were suberbly constructed by English Makers for Seranco here in South Africa.
As you can see they are very well made in a slightly 'Rococo' Style and quite heavy in their cast design. They each measure some 103 X 83 mm. the four weigh in at about 400 grams.
"Quartermaster's Comment":- We heard a tale told that these were lifted from the Malawi Embassy.......but this has to go on record as being just a tale!!!!
Nevertheless these dishes are the sort of kit which could well have been used at such a place.
A very usable addition to your home or even your home pub counter!!!! |
