A HALLMARKED 'EPERGNE'; CHESTER 1911.
With some delight we give you our first offering in the way of a fine item of British Hallmarked Silver......which would make a memorable centrepiece to any dining table.
This style of Dining Room Centre Piece.......of a somewhat 'Art Deco' Flavour was typical of the date of its make in Chester, England in 1911.
While the base has been 'Loaded'......as was typical of Candelabra and Candlesticks made at this time......the overall weight is recorded as some 510 grams.
The height is 320 mm and the Base measures 110 mm across.
How nice to have a maker from Chester.........That Assay Office closed down on the 24th of August 1962........now almost half a century ago.........and this fine piece will be 100 years old next year!!!!
We do not come across the word "Epergne" very often these days. Our 'Oxford' Dictionary gives us:- 'An ornament...(Esp. in branched form; for the centre of a Dining Table; holding flowers or fruit'). The word actually dates from the 18th Century French......Epargne......which translates to 'Saving' or 'Economy'.
"Quartermaster's Comment":- We are told that this item graced the table of a retired Brigadier who spent his last years in Kenya.......way back then!!!
It is in superb condition.........and I am sure will have great appeal to our American Clients who so vigourously embraced fine items of the "Art Deco" period.
The Makers' Mark is a 'S' followed by a 'C'. We are still checking this Mark out but so far have found nothing in the likes of 'Wyler'.........I am right now asking friends in the U.K. to dig further......I am positive that we shall track the maker down.
Would any of you out there who need further information........(Photographs or whatever).......please contact us. |
