"Quartermaster's Comment":-
IVAN de BURGH DALY was born on the 14th of April 1893 and died at the age of 81 on the 8th of February 1974.
He was educated at Rossall School, Gonville where in 1911 he was awarded The Royal Humane Society's Silver Medal for 'PROFICIENCY IN SWIMMING EXERCISE with reference to saving life from drowning". This Medal is included with the Group. He then went to Caius College, Cambridge to read Medicine.
When War broke out he joined up as a Private in the R.A.M.C. but later transfered to the Royal Naval Air Service from 1915 to 1917.
On the 1st of June 1916 he was a casualty, having been injured during a dual with enemy aircraft which was shot up near Abeele. At that time he was a member of 4 Wing, R.N.A.S., flying a Nieuport 10, No. 3176. Included is his souvenir of his flying days with the note for 'YPRES', Ist of June 1916, (This is also included with the lot). See the photos.
Due to his Medical skills he was transfered to the 'INVALIDING MEDICAL BOARD' , where he is noted as being a Captain in the R.A.F.M.S.,serving at both Hampstead and York in 1918.
During World War Two he worked with the Armoured Fighting Vehicle Training School at Lulworth in Dorset. Hence his only Medal for WW2 being the Defence Medal.
His 1914-15 Star is named P.FLT.S.LT. I. DE B. DALY R.N., while his War and Victory Medals are named to him with the Rank of FLT. LT.in the R.N.A.S. His Second World War Defence Medal and the Coronation Medal are of course un-named.
His appointments and accomplishments during his life are too numerous to include here but should you wish for more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
The reason why this group is so reasonably priced is because the C.B.E. is an excellent facsimile, though this does not deflect from a man of great merit who served his country well in both peace and war.
