A DE WET AND GENERAL SERVICE MEDALS PAIR
E-mail
As you can see from the photo; these two medals have been pinned up for display but do not look as if they have been ever mounted up for wear and appear to be both in MINT Condition.
We have NO naming here but the De Wet Medal is Numbered 12385 and the General Service Medal is Numbered 125684.
"Quartermaster's Comment":- You will find a complete write up on the De Wet Medal in the Medal Year Book under No. SA35.
It was instituted in 1987 and was awarded for ten years service in the Commandos.
The Medal is cast in Brass with a lacquered bronze paint finish.
The General Service Medal is found as No. SA39 in the Medal Year Book.
It was instituted in 1989. This would appear to be the 'First' Type which was issued to All Members of the Defence Force who did Service within South Africa's Borders from the 19th of August 1983. It was later issued for specific operations into Lesotho......(1998-1999)......for which a bar in Silver was also added. The bar had the Title "MALUTI". Other operations included; The Congo, Burundi; Algiers; Mozambique; Zimbabwe and the Comorres. Sadly BARS were NOT issued for these further operations.
An in-expensive pair......if you do not have them in your collection.
