See the full story on this interesting Medal as No. SA38 in the Medal Year Book. It came out in 1989 and was made of Nickel Silver. The idea was to use metal from a captured Russian T 34 but the material was found NOT to be suitable so they took a small amount of melted metal from the tank and mixed it in with Nickel Silver!!!!
This example is the first type which has a uniface suspender struck as an integral part of the medal. It is in near mint condition and numbered 013696 on the Reverse.
"Quartermaster's Comment":- The medal was awarded for participation in specified cross-border activities in the defence of the Republic of South Africa. It was originally going to be named the "Trans Jati Medal".........Jati being the 'Cut-Line'.
