AN ON WAR SERVICE LAPEL BADGE TO THE R.A.O.C. FOR 1915
E-mail
This is a very nice badge for those who collect the odd thing to British Troops for the First World War. "Quartermaster's Comment":- As you can see from the photos this badge is dated 1915: just about the time that ladies were offering 'White Feathers' to men that they saw 'Not in Uniform'. In order to obviate this, soldiers on leave and in mufti wore one of these badges. In this case it is especially for those of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Further the badge is actually numbered 4487. There is a 'Z' stamped behind the King's Crown. I am not sure what this was for. The maker, J.R. GAUNT & SON LTD. is in raised lettering. For those of you who do not know. The badge to the Ordnance is of interest. The reason why the three 'Cannon Balls' are larger than the Cannons is to remind them of the occasion when they turned up for a battle with the wrong sized ammunition for the guns. I think it was Naseby. Someone out there will tell me if I am wrong. This is a very nice item.
