SOUTHERN RHODESIA ARTILLERY GILT CAP/BERET BADGE
A Fine Gilt three lugged Artillery Badge which has quite a history.
Only 47 mm across at the widest......this attractive Gilt Artillery Badge has three lugs for secure fitting either as a Cap/Forage Badge or for use with a beret. We are suppling this badge with a good sized square of Red Felt Backing......which was affixed to the rear for 'High Days and Holidays'
"Quartermaster's Comment":- Colin Owen had quite a bit to say about this badge when he noted it as No. 3023 in his book.
The Southern Rhodesian Artillery was given this badge on being raised back in 1947. It was used as a Forage Cap Badge and also as a beret badge. For some reason they were disbanded in 1956 save for an elite Volunteer Troop which looked after Ceremonial Occassions for the Governor General. In November of 1961 the unit was brought back to full strength again......but now as the 1st Field Regiment of the Rhodesia and Nyasaland Artillery. It was a Volunteer Unit. After Federation it was re-titled the 1st Field Regiment (S.R.A.) Rhodesian Artillery. This badge thus ran from 1947 through until 1980 in one form or another. A particularly nice bit of history. |
