This Badge is an Owen No. 1640 or a Collar No. 1642.

This is the Second Version of this badge which would have come out in about 1940/1. They were made out of Brass by the South African Mint in Pretoria and then given a 'Black' War coating......which was nearly always polished out. The badge was made as cheaply as possible with folded over sections for lugs which inevitably had to be neatly re-modelled.....as has been done here.

"Quartermaster's Comment":- An interesting badge all round. We undestand that South Africa sent something like a couple of thousand ladies 'Up North' to help out behind the lines......and sometimes quite close to it. As the four images on the badge show......They did Book-keeping and Accounting, (The Book is NOT a Bible!!!) They drove ambulances......Note how this Second Version does have a 'Red Cross' on the side of the vehicle.....In the First version it looked a bit like a Bread Van!!!!......They were into Signals very seriously and also trucked up ammunition for the lads up at the sharp end. The 'Thing' in the top is Spatula.....To indicate the making of Bread!!!! An interesting badge.
