Owen has these down as Nos. 1070 and 1071. They came out in 1940 and were used during the Second World War. When they were produced during the war years by the South African Mint......they came out with a 'Black' finish......but many, as with these, were polished up to their brass "Under-Metal". 

"Quartermaster's Comment":- The badges in this series were in fact used up until around 1960......but those that came out after the war had a bright gilt finish.
