TRANSVAAL CADETS, FIRST BATTALION, SINGLE COLLAR.
There is an interesting aspect of the design of this badge which we only picked up recently. While the very first School Cadet Corps is reputed to have been created by Pastor Heinrich Muller of Hermannsburg (Boarding) School in Natal in 1868 (in fact this is noted to be the first Cadet Corps in the British Empire), English Speaking Schools in the Transvaal wanted to follow. This of course was well before the Boer War. Oom Paul Kruger was prepared for them to form a "Boys Brigade" under the eye of the church but would not allow a fledgling 'Military' , 'Army' style establishment to be created. The least he would allow was a form of "Sea Scouts" and hence the Anchor in the centre of the badge. "Quartermaster's Comment":- This has to be one of South Africa's badges of shortest duration as it came out in 1904 and ran only to late 1905. A RARE item.
